Engineering Manager – Preconstruction

Boyd Recruitment are delighted to be working in partnership with a leading civil engineering contractor to recruit an experienced Engineering Manager to join their Preconstruction Team based at their Head Office in Glasgow

This is a senior leadership opportunity for a Chartered Civil Engineer looking to take ownership of design management across both preconstruction and live construction phases within a well-established and forward-thinking business.

The Role

Reporting directly to the Preconstruction Director, you will lead and manage all design activities, overseeing internal engineering and CAD teams, coordinating external designers, and providing high-level technical support across projects.

This is a strategic and hands-on role requiring strong leadership capability, technical excellence, and commercial awareness.

Key Responsibilities

Design & Team Management

• Lead and manage design, engineering and CAD personnel

• Coordinate workload to ensure timely project delivery

• Manage permanent and temporary works design within agreed budgets and programmes

• Oversee design compliance, CDM, H&S and environmental standards

• Ensure robust design control through Viewpoint for Projects

• Maintain accurate and auditable design records

Technical Leadership

• Provide technical advice across preconstruction and construction stages

• Develop value-engineered alternative solutions

• Review complex method statements

• Advise on defects and compensation events

• Support ISO 19650 implementation

Stakeholder Engagement

• Liaise with clients, suppliers and third-party stakeholders

• Assist with supplier approvals and technical standards development

• Support estimating through provision of technical pricing input

• Promote best practice and represent the business professionally

What We’re Looking For

• Chartered Civil Engineer

• Minimum 10 years’ experience within civil engineering

• Strong background in detailed permanent and temporary works design

• Proven leadership of engineering/design teams

• Experience securing third-party technical approvals

• Strong working knowledge of industry specifications and construction processes

• CAD proficiency

• Mix of site and design office experience desirable

• CSCS card preferred
